La Fête de l’Étampage

Every year on May the 1st, the village of Marais-Vernier still celebrates an old community practice: branding.

Its origin dates back to the late 18th century. At that time, the inhabitants branded their cattles and horses with a branding iron in order to recognize their herds in the communal fields. The branding iron used to be heated in the wrought and each animal was marked with letters MV (Marais Vernier) on the horn for cattle and on the hoof for horses
